Power line carrier (PLC) was first introduced in the 1920s. Since then, PLC technology has evolved into a mature and relaible communications technique for power transmission systems. Today it is used primarily for protective relaying, SCADA and voice data on transmission systems. Utilities have looked favourably upon PLC because of the positive experience they have had with it in transmission applications.
